The £11m DeltaStream device will become Wales’ first full-scale tidal generator when it is sited off the Pembrokeshire coast next year.
It will feed power to the city of St Davids during a year-long demonstration period.
The cash needed to bring DeltaStream into operation came from the European Regional Development Fund via the Welsh government.
Welsh company Tidal Energy Limited (TEL) has been working on the device since 2002, with backing from local renewable energy developer Eco2.
