China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) approved Luding station (920MW) in Sichuan province and Dongjing station (880MW) in Guizhou province. Both will be built in the country’s water-rich southwest region.
Hydropower is a central part of China’s plan for diversifying its energy mix with a heavy eye towards renewables. While the country is currently only using around one-fourth of its hydropower potential, it intends to triple its capacity by 2020 to around 300,000MW.
