Although officials have grown increasingly conciliatory in making the case for expanding hydropower, dam construction remains a hot issue in China, with new sites often drawing thousands of protesters. An estimated 1.1 million people were displaced by the construction of the Three Gorges dam.
Beijing pushes ahead
China says it will build two more major hydropower plants with a total capacity of 1,800 megawatts (MW), as its controversial push to develop its vast hydroelectric resources continues.
