"In 2010, we, as ministers, will have to make a decision, and that decision will be predicated upon not only the shortlisted schemes, but also whether those schemes that are being proposed as being more environmentally friendly can rise to the level of being practically applicable."
A barrage of debate
Tidal power projects have been considered for the Severn Estuary for over 100 years. This week, the UK government earmarked five schemes - three barrages and two 'lagoons' - for closer scrutiny to help meet its renewable energy targets. These are now up for consultation
