In the first announcements by his transition team, Brazil’s president-elect Jair Bolsonaro has decided to keep a separate energy ministry, despite merging several others and dismantling the environment ministry.

The Mines and Energy Ministry, which will keep its independent structure, could welcome Adriano Pires as its new minister. Pires is one of Brazil’s leading free-market policy advocates in the energy sector and a strong critic of the former centre-left governments of the Workers’ Party in the 2003-2016 period.
