Verdant President Trey Taylor says the company hopes to obtain a license for the pilot project within six months.
The company plans to install 30 hydrokinetic power turbines in phases totaling 1MW in a channel of the fast-flowing East River in New York City, according to the application filed with FERC and obtained by Recharge.
The East River is technically a tidal strait that connects Long Island Sound with the Upper New York Bay.
