The global wind-power industry has great expectations of Europe’s offshore regions. According to a new study by Spain’s Emerging Energy Research, 80% of electricity generated by offshore wind is foreseen as flowing from Europe by 2020, with the UK and Germany together making up half of the next decade’s installed capacity worldwide.

To hit the European Wind Energy Association’s (EWEA) target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of installed offshore wind capacity by 2020 — and, indeed, to stand any chance of coming close to its aim of generating 150GW by 2030 — a 28% annual growth in the market will be needed.
