The cuttings will be transformed into a clean, hydrogen rich, product gas the company calls “Blue Gas”, which can be used in a combined heat and power plant to produce electricity. The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is subsidizing the project to the tune of €7.1m.

The electricity from the 42 metre tower project will provide around 12,000 homes in Herten with power, while the 150 sq m of hydrogen that it will produce will go to a neighbouring technology centre.

“Our
