The project aims to improve the operations and maintenance economics of offshore wind where developers will have to operate in harsh conditions with waves as high as three metres. The aim is potentially to boost revenues by as much as £3bn ($4.1bn).
Turbines are typically available to generate power 90% of the time, but maintenance has to be performed by personnel stepping off boats onto ladders attached to transition pieces.
