A 50-50 jatropha biofuel blend saved more than 1.4 metric tons of jet fuel during a 12-hour test flight and offered performance improvements over Jet A1 fuel alone, Air New Zealand says.

The airline released early results of the test, conducted 30 December, at an Eco-Aviation conference Thursday in Washington, D.C. The effort to develop an environmentally friendly aviation fuel was conducted in partnership with aircraft maker Boeing, Rolls-Royce and UOP, a Honeywell company.
