IBM says theso-called ‘Hybrid Renewable Energy Forecasting’ (HyRef) system combines weathermodelling capabilities, with detailed information on wind turbine and solarpanel output to allow utilities to model output in near real time.
HyRef usesweather modelling, advanced cloud imaging technology and sky-facing cameras totrack cloud movements, while sensors on the turbines monitor wind speed,temperature and direction.
Whencombined with analytics technology, it is claimed that this can produceaccurate local weather forecasts within the location of a wind farm for up toone month in advance, or in 15-minute increments.
