Last month the US and China jointly announced commitments to slashing their carbon emissions, with US President Barack Obama setting a reduction target for his country of 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025, and Chinese President Xi Jinping announcing China’s emissions will peak “around 2030”.
Moniz says China's emissions-peak commitment is "extremely significant".
But he adds that other announcement that China made -- that 20% of the country's total energy consumption will come from “non-fossil” sources by 2030 -- is also of enormous importance to the global climate and the renewables sector.
