The additions and higher-than-usual solar irradiation last year have made solar the second-largest renewable energy behind hydro, meeting about 2% of the country's electricity consumption according to preliminary figures.

That pales compared to neighbouring Italy and Germany, where respectively 8% and 7% of electricity consumed comes from solar, Swissolar says.

The association is appealing to lawmakers to rapidly pass a planned 2050 energy strategy legislation that foresees more financial incentives for renewables.
