The thermal solar sector, however, had only 6,700 new installations last year, 17% less than in 2014.

The figures were released by industry association Swissolar, citing the national energy agency, BFE.

This year, solar will become the country's second-most-important renewable source after hydro, Swissolar adds, but it warns that due to uncertain political conditions, new installations could recede this year.

It calls on the government to create better conditions in its 2050 energy strategy.
