The Wuxi, China-based firm announced the move as it launched a solar-powered boat, the Suntech-Guosheng solar sailor, on the Huangpu River.
Suntech founder and chairman Zhengrong Shi said: "To meet the soaring global demand for Suntech's solar products, we plan to add 1,000 megawatts of crystalline silicon cell and module production capacity at our Shanghai facility within the next three years."
