SPI Solar Japan, a wholly owned unit of Shanghai-based SPI, will provide financing, procure equipment and handle construction duties.

Uniroot will lease and buy land, obtain permits and sign PPAs with regional utilities, SPI said in an online statement.

SPI will take a 51% equity stake in the venture.

They did not reveal additional details about the agreement.

The size of the planned build-out is at odds with widespread claims in recent months that growth is waning in Japan’s solar market.
