The major investor-owned utility and its counterparts in California have been scooping up loads of renewable energy this year as they race to meet the state’s toughest-in-the-nation renewable portfolio standard (RPS), which calls for 20% renewable electricity by 2010, likely rising to 33% by 2020.

Last year, 16% of Southern California Edison’s total power deliveries, or 12.6 billion kilowatt hours, met the state’s RPS guidelines.
