"The study shows that solar energy has become cheap much faster than experts had forecast so far, and will continue to do so," says Patrick Graichen, director of Berlin-based think-tank Agora Energiewende, which commissioned the report.
Generation costs of solar energy in central and southern Europe by 2025 will fall to €0.04-0.06 per kWh, and by 2050 to €0.02-0.04 per kWh, the authors of the study believe, based on what they call conservative assumptions regarding technological developments in solar plants.
