Over the past year, German engineering and renewables giant Siemens has made a series of aggressive acquisitions in the solar-thermal sector. It is also a high-profile participant in the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) joint venture, set up to realise the vision of the Desertec Foundation, which aims to create massive solar-thermal capacity in North Africa to supply as much as 15% of Europe's electricity demand.
