The research group claimed utilities are unprepared for the potential impact of solar on the continent’s power system, which it claimed “could compare to the shale gas revolution on the energy industry”.
Roland Berger, which has been working with utilities and grid operators on strategies for solar integration, said rapidly falling system prices would see PV balloon faster than anticipated.
"In our view, solar PV could be responsible for 9-12 % of total electricity production in Europe by 2030, largely exceeding expectations of IEA, the World Energy Council and even Greenpeace," said Paris office principal Emmanuel Fages.
