Panel urges Tokyo to cut PV FIT to ¥27/kWh, leave wind rate unchanged

The Japanese government may slash its feed-in tariff (FIT) for utility-scale solar projects in stages in the next fiscal year from ¥32/kWh ($0.27) at present to as low as ¥27/kWh by the summer, while leaving its rates for onshore and offshore wind projects unchanged, according to local reports.

An annual FIT review committee under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has recommended that the government offer a FIT rate of ¥29/kWh for large-scale PV project applications received from the start of the next fiscal year on 1 April to 30 June.

Solar projects under 10kW in size may be eligible for a FIT rate of between ¥33 to ¥35/kWh over 20 years, The Nikkei newspaper said.
