The 8.5MW plant — built on a plot of reclaimed land on the shores of Lake Biwa, Shiga prefecture — will annually generate enough electricity for 2,900 homes, according to an emailed statement.
The project also includes a 4kW emergency solar power-supply system and 16.2kW storage battery, as well as solar-powered streetlights and an adjacent observation deck for visitors.
The two companies’ joint venture, Kyocera TCL Solar, began working on the array in October 2013.
