JA kept a tight lid on its operating expenses and decreased its R&D spending in the quarter, helping to boost its gross margin to 17.7%, up from 15% in the year-ago quarter.
JA’s total quarterly shipments soared 44% year on year, to 1.13GW, blowing past the Beijing-based company’s own guidance of 900MW-950MW.
Just 53MW of those shipments were cells, reflecting JA’s near-total transformation from a cell maker in years past to a supplier of finished – and largely own-branded – modules today.
