The plan, to be called India’s ‘National Solar Mission’, has not yet been officially announced, but was leaked to prominent environmental organisations. The solar strategy calls for a national target of 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar generation capacity by 2020; 100GW by 2030; and an astounding 200GW by 2050.

India currently produces just 700 megawatts of photovoltaic cells each year, but that figure will zoom to 20GW by 2017.
