India believes the states of California, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana and Washington have made subsidies for renewable energy projects contingent on domestic content requirements, thus discriminating against foreign manufacturers and in breach of world trade norms because they provide less favourable treatment for imported products.

"India has requested consultations with the US under the dispute settlement system regarding alleged domestic content requirements and subsidies provided by eight US states in the renewable energy sector,” the WTO said in a statement.
