The country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has set out an ambitious plan to liberalise the retail electricity market and unbundle generation, transmission and distribution by 2020.
But Tomas Kåberger, executive chair of the Japan Renewable Energy Foundation (JREF), said at an industry event in Tokyo that METI should expedite the reform process to encourage the rollout of renewables other than PV – thus far the only such resource to see significant development in Japan.
