The 54-year-old Brazilian energy minister has come directly from a “political co-ordination” cabinet meeting chaired by President Dilma Rousseff, whose popularity has plummeted in the wake of the Petrobras scandal, in which bribes from construction companies to the national oil giant ended up in the bank accounts of members of her Workers’ Party (PT).

Braga’s party, the Democratic Movement, which is one of seven parties in the governing coalition, is threatening to withdraw its support for Rousseff, who was chairman of Petrobras when the bribes were taken.

On
