Austin Energy says it settled on its proposal – called the “500+ plan” – after analysing “scores” of future-generation scenarios, weighing factors like cost, risk and environmental impact.
The plan calls for the addition of 500MW of utility-scale solar, 375MW of wind, and a new 500MW gas-fired unit by 2025.
During that period, Austin Energy would also retire 735MW of gas capacity at its Decker Creek plant, in operation since the 1960s, and its only coal-fired station, the Fayette Power Plant, in which it owns 602MW of capacity.
