The new "sales and installation" service, open for business as of 1 July, will be administered on an unregulated basis by Georgia Power Energy Services, a unit that has previously focused on energy-efficiency services.
That fact that the service will be provided on an unregulated basis gives Georgia Power some cover from those in the residential solar business who claim that regulated utilities – which can rate-base their expenses – have an unfair advantage in the space.
