The research institute developed a new concept that features a full-area passivated back contact, without the need for extra patterning on the cell’s rear.
According to Fraunhofer ISE, that means its technology – called TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) – combines extra efficiency with a less complex manufacturing process.
It said TOPCon does away with the need for either an aluminium-alloyed back contact, which limits efficiency, or the addition of PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) technology, which requires patterning and leads to longer conduction paths.
