Southern Power acquired the Butler project from Community Energy, as part of Southern Company’s growing push into renewables. Atlanta-based Southern Company, among the largest US electricity companies, remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels, but is steadily diversifying its energy mix toward renewables.
Arizona-based First Solar will supply the Butler project with more than 1 million of its thin-film modules, construct it, and then stay on to handle O&M.
