In 2013 First Solar acquired TetraSun and its “breakthrough cell architecture” from JX Nippon Oil & Energy, with the aim of breaking into the booming market for rooftop solar.
The acquisition came amid concerns that First Solar’s CdTe thin-film technology was increasingly uncompetitive against the standard c-Si panels made by its Chinese rivals, particularly in space-constrained settings, where higher-efficiency modules have an advantage.
