According to a memorandum of understanding signed with the state government, Essel Infraprojects — a unit of the Mumbai-based diversified conglomerate — will invest as much as 40bn Indian rupees ($645.3m) to develop PV projects around the cities of Bikaner and Jaisalmer, in the Thar Desert near the Pakistani border.

Essel Group hopes to eventually start producing its own PV modules, it said in an online statement.
