The government has just announced the end of direct Treasury subsidies to its Energy Development Account (CDE in Portuguese), which according to the 2015 budget were set to total R$9 bn ($3.4 bn).

This subsidy – used for ongoing programmes such as expanding electricity supply to remote rural areas and subsidising power bills of low-income families – will now be paid by consumers, which means that electricity prices will rise an estimated 30% for residential consumers and just over 10% for industrial and commercial users, according to market projections.
