DISPATCHES: Energy supremo Braga weathers Brazil's storms

Even as Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff was preparing a deep cabinet reshuffle last week, mines and energy minister Eduardo Braga was at an event telling power sector leaders that rooftop solar in the country will be the new frontier for energy, showing his confidence that he'd be staying in the government.

Braga – a savvy and tested politician from the northern state of Amazonas – has been one of the most pro-active energy ministers since Rousseff herself left the ministry in 2005, after reorganising a failed system and introducing competitive auctions and long-term planning in 2004, paving the way for Brazil's world prominence in wind.

Braga survived the deep cabinet reshuffle aimed at creating some positive news for an unpopular and embattled government facing political and economic instability.
