Clinton to push for North American Climate Compact

Upon being elected US president, Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 election, would “immediately” launch negotiations with Canada and Mexico to form a North American Climate Compact – linking the continent’s energy and climate objectives in an unprecedented way.

The compact would join up the US, Canadian and Mexican strategies for cutting their national greenhouse gas emissions, while boosting oversight of – and investment into – those efforts.

The plan would help to unleash “billions” of dollars of investment into the North American energy sector – much of it, presumably, into renewables. This summer Clinton unveiled her “Clean Energy Challenge” for the US, pledging as president to expand US solar capacity to 140GW by 2020, up from 20GW at present.
