The power purchase agreements (PPA), which still require approval from the California Public Utilities Commission, represent a first win for BrightSource’s SolarPLUS storage technology and “the biggest set of contracts in the world for energy storage”, says chief executive John Woolard.

The new PPAs cover six BrightSource power tower plants, replacing earlier agreements to build seven. But increased efficiencies from the company’s next-generation taller towers, as well as increased capacity factors from the addition of storage to part of the portfolio, will result in roughly the same annual energy output: approximately 4,000GWh.
