NextEra, the largest generator of wind and solar power in North America, offered to buy Hawaiian Electric in late 2014. NextEra argues that it is uniquely capable of helping Hawaii solve the urgent challenges facing its electricity system – as well as achieving its nation-leading 100% renewables goal for 2045.
However, NextEra’s bid has been bitterly opposed by powerful forces in Hawaii, including Governor David Ige.
