Apple will construct the data centre in Mesa – appropriately at a facility formerly owned by US PV group First Solar.
The Mesa site was subsequently occupied by GT Advanced Technologies, the producer of PV equipment – and also an Apple supplier – which went bankrupt late last year.
Apple has previously financed solar projects to support facilities in North Carolina and Nevada, but the Arizona PV would be its biggest commitment yet.
Apple – which recently posted a world-record $18bn quarterly profit – is one of a growing number of tech groups tapping renewables for their power.
