On Thursday, FERC issued a six-page order giving California-based Apple the ability to sell excess electricity power to public utilities in the country’s second largest power market after Texas.
Apple can also sell capacity and ancillary services, which generally include frequency control, spinning reserves and operating reserves that are required to maintain grid stability and security.
Part of the surplus power that Apple hopes to sell will come from rooftop solar arrays on its new headquarters in Cupertino, California.
