Like many PV manufacturers, loss-making Yingli is scrambling to diversify beyond the fiercely competitive module-supply business, and has pushed into downstream project development and operation.

To date, its efforts have largely focused on China, where it has connected 180MW to the grid, and the UK, where it recently sold a 19MW project to a solar investment fund.

With Nameme, Yingli will establish a 50:50 joint venture, called Yingli Namene West Africa, which aims to build 100MW of utility-scale and 50MW of C&I rooftop capacity in Ghana and neighbouring countries over the next few years, with first construction to kick off in 2017.
