Oettinger replaces Andris Piebalgs, who is set to take over as Commisioner for Development in the new set-up.
He is currently president of the German Land (province) of Baden-Württemberg and is a member of the right wing Christian Democrat (CDU) party.
EWEA points out in a statement that in 2007 Oettinger raised the Land’s target for renewables to 20% of electricity by 2020, up from 11.8%
