“We cannot afford to ignore or underestimate this existential threat. Failure to combat climate change will increase poverty and hardship,” Ban said, speaking at a sustainability conference in New Delhi, India.
Many countries are in danger of going soft on climate issues in order to focus on short-term economic ailments. In doing so, they will not only do irreparable damage to the environment, but also miss out on “exciting” opportunities in the emerging low-carbon economy, he said.
