Emissions have fallen 21.7% compared to 1990, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol, under which the UK is legally bound.

In total, the UK coughed up 636.6 million tonnes of the ‘carbon dioxide equivalent’ of the six greenhouse gases covered under Kyoto in 2007. Carbon dioxide itself accounted for 85% of the UK’s total.

Despite the reductions, the UK is still struggling to meet its targets.
