In total, the UK plans to auction 25 million allowances in 2009 as part of the second phase of the EU’s ETS (phase II), which covers the period from 2008 to 2012.
UK became the world’s first country to auction carbon allowances in late 2008, selling four million allowances for a total of £54m ($79.1m).
The UK intends to sell 7% of its total allowances during phase II, or 86 million allowances, with the rest being given to industry free of charge.
