SSE will give power and gas customers on the Isle of Wight registered to its new community programme the option to designate £1 ($1.58) per month to support Ecoisland – a project that hopes to make the island of 140,000 self-sufficient via renewables by 2020 – or take it as a discount on their bill.

The utility will also make payments to the Ecoisland scheme once pre-set numbers of islanders sign up to the new initiative – with 100,000 registrations attracting £1m.

SSE, which operates on the island as Southern Electric, has already funded and initiated a number of projects there, including installing electric-vehicle charging points, and is supporting a bid to host a two-year commercial hydrogen trial.
