Japan announced a new energy and environment strategy last month, which aims to phase out nuclear power completely by 2040.
The nation also foresees renewable energy making up 30% of its energy supply by the 2030s.
However Tanaka, now a global associate for energy security and sustainability at the Institute of Energy Economics in Japan, says: “I am very sceptical about the feasibility of this plan.”
