Much of the loss was due to an inventory provision of $20.3m, the company said. Net loss per diluted ADS in the first quarter of 2009 was $0.18, compared with net income per ADS of $0.15 in the same period of 2008.

"The first quarter of 2009 was the most challenging for JA Solar since the company was founded in 2005," says chief executive Samuel Yang.
