The decision, approved by the relevant ministerial committee, is a serious blow to Israel’s nascent utility-scale wind sector, for which a feed-in tariff (FIT) was first approved last year with a total cap of 800MW.
Israeli wind developers have been hamstrung by radar-related objections lodged by the Defence Ministry.
In response, Uzi Landau – the country’s pro-renewables minister of energy and water – recently suggested opening up 300MW of the 800MW allocated for wind to the PV sector, which has taken off in the past year and is able to obtain building and other consents far easier.
