Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say their data shows that July temperatures across the country minus Alaska and Hawaii beat the previous high for that month in 1936.

That year was the worst during the Dust Bowl, a period in the 1930s of severe dust storms that caused major ecological and agricultural damage to American and Canadian prairie lands.
